Threading with Hair // Intertwined Stories (MFA thesis)
Recorded from my diary on July 14th, 2023:
It was a video chat. It wasn't until my mom had finished her sentences of concern about my recent life, and when I finally decided to look up and see her face on the screen, that I recognized some roots of her hair had already turned gray, and even white.
For a moment, I stared at her hair, then I cried.
The tears were a mixture of frustration over my school life, regret for calling Mom at midnight and interrupting her sleep (because she's such a light sleeper), and worry about whether her recent life was too busy to relax and take care of herself.
The first teardrop flowed out. I saw mom stop and frown, and I heard her ask what happened to her baby and why her baby's crying.
In this new space that opened between us, came the realization that I have never seen
mom with long hair.
